ME/CFS Choices – What would you Decide?

Lately I’ve been making decisions about what I want to be doing – real, active, conscious decisions.  I’m getting to the point in my life where odds are, there is less of it ahead of me than behind me.  The term ‘bucket list’ has become popular.  But I’m not thinking about specific events or activities that I want to check off a list.  I’m thinking about the way I want to live my daily life.  And of course this has gotten me thinking about my struggle with ME/CFS and what I’m doing with my hard won, regained wellness.

Once I knew that ME/CFS was in my past, I did not choose to go back to the fast paced, stressful life that I led prior to being ill.  I decided to live a life focused on my family and to make better wellness decisions.  In retrospect, I’d say that I was reasonably successful in that choice.

If restoring your wellness is your current goal, imagine the kind of life you would choose to live, having been through all this, if you were well again.  Would you go back to the old pace?  The old ways of marginal self-care?  What kind of focus would you have in life as a well person?  When you think about your prior lifestyle choices, which would you resume?  What would you dump?  Please COMMENT on this blog or Send in your thoughts and I’ll post them with your permission.  You can use the Contact Form or send an email to Martha at DefeatCFS dot net.  And Guest Blogs are most welcome!

Look for a weekly posting on Tuesdays.  And consider being part of the conversation.

Be Well Again,

Martha

Your blog made me smile, Martha. I have given this a lot of thought over the 20 years that my life has been affected by ME/CFS. My goals have changed and matured along with me due to the lessons that I've learned living this life. I believe that I would still choose a rather simple life continuing healthy eating habits and being aware of my body's signals. I would definitely instill a moderate exercise plan of yoga and walking...maybe a wee bit of running and riding a bike. Oh, how I would love to feel that speed and freedom again! I would want to assume a few more household tasks giving my husband more freedom. Oh, and some days tackle a cleaning project; I've had to settle for others' standards for far too long! It's hard to imagine going to a store, going to the salon and going out to dinner without all the forethought that it now demands and paying the price for days afterward!! I think that It would be like being released from a long prison sentence! So, that's the cake; the frosting would be visiting my kids and my mom in their homes, cultivating a few friendships, day trips to explore our local area and NYC, seeing shows, and going to events with ease. The cherry: my husband and I have often talked of hitting the road in our camper van and heading in whatever direction the wind is blowing. We would be seeing the sights, both traditional and quirky, and reconnecting with old friends who live around the country. After re-reading what I've written, I see a theme: freedom!

Freedom indeed! I like your choices. Simple and healthy. We'd like to travel in our camper van too. Holding that vision :) Thanks Donna!

What an inspiring vision of how you would enjoy living your life with freedom, Donna. Your path has brought you much wisdom. For me, being in nature with not a soul around, just reclining in my chair at the cabin and seeing the birds in free flight, not like in the city, but truly free and joyful. Seeing five young teenage deer, frolicking and teasing with each other, so full of life. My heart and spirit goes with them. Thank you Martha for bringing to mind that in our journeys, even during difficult moments, there can be brighter moments ahead, and in dark feeling days, there are still ways we can be free within. Tim
