ME/CFS/SEID Choices – What would you Decide?

Lately I’ve been making decisions about what I want to be doing – real, active, conscious decisions.  I’m getting to the point in my life where odds are, there is less of it ahead of me than behind me.  The term ‘bucket list’ has become popular.  But I’m not thinking about specific events or activities that I want to check off a list.  I’m thinking about the way I want to live my daily life.  And of course this has gotten me thinking about my struggle with ME/CFS/SEID and what I’m doing with my hard won, regained wellness.

Once I knew that ME/CFS/SEID was in my past, I did not choose to go back to the fast paced, stressful life that I led prior to being ill.  I decided to live a life focused on my family and to make better wellness decisions.  In retrospect, I’d say that I was reasonably successful in that choice.

If restoring your wellness is your current goal, imagine the kind of life you would choose to live, having been through all this, if you were well again.  Would you go back to the old pace?  The old ways of marginal self-care?  What kind of focus would you have in life as a well person?  When you think about your prior lifestyle choices, which would you resume?  What would you dump?  Please COMMENT on this blog or Send in your thoughts and I’ll post them with your permission.  You can use the Contact Form or send an email to Martha at DefeatCFS dot net.  And Guest Blogs are most welcome!

Look for a weekly posting on Tuesdays.  And consider being part of the conversation.

Be Well Again,
Martha

I can see that for me in my own life, Martha, a key that you mention is leading a life with too much stress and that making us more vulnerable to illness. I just got back from my cabin in Idaho, having a marvelously relaxed time, with nature being so close. What a transformation, flying into the Seattle International airport, what everyone here calls Sea-Tac, and seeing all of these people everywhere, so many more people, so much more activity, so much more traffic (and along with that and expectation that as a driver of a car, you need to move it right along).

Thankfully I live north of Seattle but even here, it's stunning how much growth has happened, I'd guess that traffic here on the main roads is five times what it was in the mid 70s.

I grew up in a modest sized town in Idaho, so have always enjoyed getting out and away from the city, at that time only about two hours from West Yellowstone.

For me, there is so much more opportunity for relaxing and getting away from the too stressful lifestyle I did lead, by going out in nature. I live here near Seattle in a suburb, and thankfully that developer who created it in the mid 70s left many original existing trees, many of which are now towering giants. So though there are houses nearby, there is an opportunity for quiet, calm, inner harmony. Even for those in city environments, it is helpful to find a quiet spot in your home, or hopefully a quiet park with nice trees, perhaps best when children are in school :)

I completely agree Tim. Nature can provide a calm respite from the often frenzied pace of our lives. I enjoy living in a quiet setting that has a lot of wildlife. And I try to get out into nature often. Thanks!

Hello Martha and everyone, I just found this story about the 'pursuit of silence', which had its beginnings in Seattle and now has spread out to major cities even overseas. Along this line of finding quiet time for ourselves, it seems we aren't the only ones looking for calm our lives :)
