ME/CFS/SEID Hope – Take Action

Recently the Dalai Lama was visiting the Boston area and we were able to watch one of his talks via live stream on the web.  Like most spiritual leaders, he shared some universal ideas about our common humanity.  After his talk, he answered questions from the audience.  One person asked if he prayed and did he feel that prayer was helpful for creating world peace.  His answer was quick and emphatic.  “No!  Not prayer or hope or blessings.  For change, you need action.”
 
I immediately thought back to my struggle with ME/CFS/SEID.  Although hope was good to have, it didn’t get me anywhere without action to back it up.  It wasn’t until I stopped looking for someone else to cure me that I finally started to make progress toward wellness.  It was the specific actions from my protocol that got me well.  And of course I was optimistic and hopeful as much as I could manage.  But that didn’t allow me to defeat ME/CFS/SEID.  It was the day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month actions I took to bring about my recovery.

I saw the Dalai Lama in the 90s in Portland, Oregon, there must have been a few thousand there, his voice, his warm chuckling, he touched everyone's hearts and spirits.

From my own journey, I know the great importance of having hope, as that was a precious commodity in the beginning of this illness, and your book Martha brought me that hope, of recovery, of the possibility of healing.

Then as you say, it takes action to realize our journey fully. lately I have been trying harder, as my business can be so stressful. to remind myself I realized in my 30s, that when it got to be 9 pm, I couldn't really call anyone about any issue, without being rude that is. And I am reconnecting with this basic idea, that it is hard sometimes to let go, but I know how important it is especially now, to do just that in the evenings, to relax as much as I can, reminding myself that I have done my best for the day, there is only so much I can do in one day, and that my health is most important for me personally, to attend to my health is paramount.

Tim, I enjoyed your comment on when to rest. Our world can be so go, go, go. But that is not sustainable even for those with maximum capacity. Rest is important for everyone, not just those working toward wellness. Thanks!
