ME/CFS/SEID Self-Care – We Need Better Grades

I’ve been struggling with one of those annoying summer colds.  It wasn’t as bad as a prolonged bout with the flu but frustrating.  I haven’t felt well enough to get out into the beautiful summer weather.  I’m finally starting to feel better and today I’ll begin to get back on track.  But I’m taking it slow – a life lesson I’ve learned from my own protocol.  And of course I did a lot of thinking about ME/CFS/SEID while I was sick.It was easy to taste once again the cruelty of that nightmare as I struggled with a ‘flu’ that wouldn’t let go of me.

So I’ve thought about self-care and the poor quality of it in my life.  I seem to be marginally taking care of myself.  Honestly, a health coach would give me a grade of C minus.  I know better and yet I’m not doing the right things.  I don’t know if it’s human nature or nurture, but as long as we can get away with not caring for ourselves, we don’t.  Then something happens.  When our health is threatened, we pay attention.

Fresh off a this cold, I’m paying attention.  And at least right now, I plan to stay on top of it.   I deserve better self-care than I’ve been getting from myself.  How well have you been taking care of yourself?  What’s your self-care grade?  Please COMMENT on this blog or Send in your thoughts and I’ll post them with your permission.  You can use the Contact Form or send an email to Martha at DefeatCFS dot net.  And Guest Blogs are most welcome!

Look for a weekly posting on Tuesdays.  And consider being part of the conversation.

Be Well Again,
Martha

This subject touches me on a deeply personal level. After a lifetime of extremely inadequate self care on both a physical and emotional level CFS stepped in and became my teacher and a calling to find a better way of life.Having recently made some difficult decisions in order to put my well being first, after some initial feelings of sadness l now know l have done the right thing to support my healing.l am proud of my progress and now need to take the time to acknowledge it fully.Thank you again Martha for your support.

It takes a great deal of courage to let go of so much in order to exclusively focus on healing. So happy for your success. Keep going Julie!

This reminds me of my own journey, Martha. That’s excellent that you recognize the pattern with your health and the self care which you need for yourself, taking it slow. The first two years with CFS/Fibro I was extra good, and took very good care but I certainly wouldn't say happy was how I was feeling. Then I found social sites like YouTube, btw another wonderful one is called UploadSociety, which is very similar to YT in it's earlier incarnation.

I also have a woman who helps me with my business so I of necessity have to be more active, which for me in modest amounts has helped my self confidence to grow and also allows me to do some things I excel at (lots of experience), with painting and drywall taping.

Still as you say, it is challenging to maintain an optimal level with our self care, but so very important. Today after taking a walk and doing a little work, I found myself snoozing soundly in my easy chair, this made easier too as I was too active yesterday. And those resting periods really help me feel better.

I think it has a lot to do with each of us wanting to live and experience life fully, and having an illness can be so limiting. But as you sagely note, it is with self care that over time we can recover.

Tim, it sounds like you're in balance with your self-care and work. That's great. Congrats. Keep it going!
