SEID/CFS Reassessment – Take a Step Back

Recently I’ve heard from several people who have been struggling with SEID/CFS for many years.  Their SEID/CFS situation is frustrating and they are not getting better.  Status quo – no change.  Nothing is more challenging – physically or mentally – than not making progress.

The adage about insanity comes to mind.  Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.  SEID/CFS creates a cruel trap where you can get stuck riding the ups and downs of energy reserves and energy demands.  And repeating the same unsuccessful scenarios over and over again.

It’s important to take a step back and reassess.  How long has it been since you had a thorough medical exam and work up?  Do you have a successful working relationship with your current doctor?  Have you provided yourself with a good sleeping environment?  Are you keeping a daily health record so you can understand your version of SEID/CFS?  Are you tracking your patterns?  Are you repeating successful patterns?  Have you created a small support group around you?  Are you fueling your wellness with nutritious food and appropriate supplements?

What can you be doing differently that can change your current situation?  What successful strategies do you need to return to?  What new strategies should you add?  Please COMMENT on this blog or Send in your thoughts and I’ll post them with your permission.  You can use the Contact Form or send an email to Martha at DefeatCFS dot net.  And Guest Blogs are most welcome!

Look for a weekly posting on Tuesdays.  And consider being part of the conversation.

Be Well Again,

Martha

Today brings a renewed sense of hope. Something arose for me on a personal level, I shared this with Martha, who is a truly supportive person. If we were a crowd, I think we should raise her up on our shoulders. How many people take the time, out of compassion, to want to share their experiences and help others, with no expectation of gain, simply to help.

I have been thinking of an element so vital to anyone in life, but especially for those of us suffering with an illness. Being ill certainly brings a feeling of vulnerability, that we truly may not be able to handle all of the tasks which we did before, the ‘job’ of everyday living, whether it is earning a living, caring for children or being a good spouse.

This illness has brought to me the importance of self care. A part of that is looking to people who help ‘boost us’, to help affirm that going through this is difficult, so challenging at times we cry. We don’t need those people that have toxic ideas, who refuse to accept the possibility of recovery or somehow seem determined to say upsetting things. One experience with a neighbor in Idaho, where I go for summers, was a man who crowed that he had taken good care of himself, that’s why he was so healthy, the implication being that because I hadn’t taken care of myself, I had become ill. A few years later he revealed that he had a major operation on his colon which had saved his life. He tends to say things inappropriate and upsetting, so I try to keep my distance.

In Martha’s book, there is a section about finding a support system, in friends, in our spouses, hopefully a supportive doctor. We have discussed this here before a bit, my addition today is that when we are ill, it is tempting to share, it is human and natural. And hopefully it is possible for most of us, depending on our individual situations, to find those who are affirming and supportive, as the old injunction goes ‘sift the wheat from the chaff’. And to find those who are supportive and understanding, and to avoid those who are not.

I completely agree, Tim, that self care is central to recovery from SEID/CFS. Some see self care as selfish. I believe that is short sighted. And, as you say, a positive support system, no matter how small, is affirming of our efforts to recover and the reality that we are truly sick. Say no to the negative people. Thanks Tim!
